Addiction Recovery Facts

A little known fact about alcohol addiction and its withdrawal symptoms is that sometime withdrawal itself can be life threatening ... and even though in the long run alcohol addiction might kill you, if detox in not administered in the right way, the withdrawal symptoms might just knock you out! Keep reading to know all about alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

People who are addicted to alcohol usually dont show much overt signs of being addicted. Psychological alcohol addiction occurs even with moderate amounts of alcohol intake regularly. People who are psychologically affected normally need alcohol before and during social gatherings. The more serious form of alcohol addiction is physical addiction. This occurs with people who are consistently heavy drinkers. When frequent or heavy drinkers decide to suddenly give up alcohol (This usually happens after a particularly heavy or embarrassing drinking session where the hung-over person swears off alcohol!) they might be sincere about quitting alcohol but with the onset of withdrawal symptoms, their bodies start to crave more and more for alcohol and it seems less of a torture for them to have a drink than not to have one and suffer the withdrawal symptoms.

The severity of withdrawal symptoms depends on how chemically dependent the drinker has actually become on alcohol. People who drink heavily daily are most definitely the most dependent on alcohol, but people who drink daily and not heavily and people who drink heavily but not daily also have high chances of being highly dependent on alcohol. For someone who is not very dependent on alcohol, the withdrawal symptoms may be as simple as jumpiness, sweating, poor appetite, headache, sleeplessness, rapid heartbeat and increased blood pressure.

However within six to forty eight hours of not drinking, heavy drinkers begin to experience the more serious withdrawal symptoms. This normally includes increased hand tremors, nausea and more specifically, hallucinations. Hallucinations are usually visual but can also include sounds and smells. Withdrawal symptoms usually last up to one week. In this period of quitting, convulsions or seizures may also surface. This is when the withdrawal symptoms actually become serious and can become dangerous if not medically treated. These symptoms can also progress to delirium tremens within 3 ... 5 days of quitting alcohol. The common symptoms of DT include hallucinations, disorientation, hyperactivity and convulsions and extreme cardiac disturbances. Once DT begins there is no known treatment to cure them. Seizures, heart attacks and grand seizures are known to occur at this time and can be fatal!

Now that you know the seriousness of withdrawal symptoms, please dont try quitting alcohol on your own, at home without medical monitoring. it is not as simple as it may sound, your life is seriously on the rocks - you can slip easily if not supported properly. Help is at hand and you should take advantage of it.
