Addiction Recovery Facts

Research is critical to mankind. It brings out rather interesting facts and figures, which amuse the common gentry, and but is of importance to historians and the powers that be. Recent research draws out rather alarming facts. The number of adolescents who are drug addicts has risen alarmingly in the past few years. Only about five percent have tasted drugs in adulthood; the remaining ninety five percent of drug addicts started their tryst with drugs when they were in their early teens. Sat up already?

Drug addiction is a brain disorder that modifies the brain and makes addicts crave for drugs all the time. Remember anyone having a penchant for the smell of petrol? Its like that. Drug addiction varies very much between adolescents and adults. This is primarily because in adults the brain has already developed, whereas an adolescents it is still developing and drug addiction causes certain irreversible damage to it. Every human brain has a certain braking system that tells us when we need to stop something or control an urge - some call it conscience, some call it divine power, some call it a set of brakes. In an adolescent brain this braking system is not completely developed so he is not able to effectively stop in prime time, thus making himself all the more vulnerable to getting addicted.

Drug addiction among adolescents has become highly commonplace because of the high levels of stress and also the peer pressure that they need to deal with on a daily basis. Adolescents are known to experiment with everything and drugs were never an exception! Once they begin to experiment with drugs, their adolescent minds interpret the dreamy aura as the in-thing, and as a result they are addicted without realizing it.

People presume drug addiction will not happen to their children because they live in good neighborhoods, send the kids to good schools etc etc. The question is not about the status of living - the question is of the status of the mind of the individual, and the strength of character displayed by him in resisting peer pressure. The truth is that drug addiction can happen to anyone, anywhere.

Today in the times of the internet, drug addiction can happen right at home. You will not even know when your boy ordered drugs using your credit card right from the PC at home! Yes, you read that right; the Internet has some of the most proliferous forums for selling illegal harmful drugs. A busted drug racket has revealed that at one point in time in 2005 almost 75000 illegal pills were being sold though the Internet everyday! That is 75 followed by THREE zeroes in ONLY 24 hours!

To prevent drug addiction at your home you must always try and keep constant vigilance over your adolescents activities on the Internet. Not to the point of being labeled an enemy, but the idea is not just to observe, but to inculcate. What? Good surfing habits, and guidance on what is wrong and right. There are simple, unobtrusive ways to do so, like keeping a track of credit card expenses. If you see any uncommon or unexpected swipe, check carefully. Also watch out for unexpected deliveries of packages to your home. These are small things that will go a long way in helping you prevent your child falling prey to drug addiction.
